William Oneill,40, had been charged with criminal attempt homicide and related charges, for his role in an officer-involved shooting that occurred Nov. 29, 2023, in the 100 block of Hershey Avenue, but he succumbed to his injuries sustained in the shooting on January 3, the DA said in an updated release adding that, "the charges against Oneill will be withdrawn by our office."

Three Lancaster City Bureau of police officers responded to a report of shots fired at the scene of the "domestic incident" involving a man who left a home with an "AR" at 4:40 a.m. on Nov. 29, the Lancaster County District Attorney Heather Adams’s Office detailed in a release.
When officers arrived at the home in the 100 block of Hershey Avenue they found the man to be armed. They "engaged [with the] armed [person] and fired their weapons," the police said.
A preliminary investigation shows the following the DA stated in a release:
"that the man was shot outside the home armed with a semiautomatic rifle. The man fired the rifle when initial officers arrived and then pointed it at the officers while being given multiple commands to drop the weapon, of which the subject refused to comply.
Body-worn camera footage of one of the officers captures the man walking to the front yard of the residence and raising the weapon to a shooting position. This officer also gave multiple commands for the man to drop the weapon. The man again failed to comply and again moved and started to raise the rifle pointing in the direction of the officer. At that time, shots were fired by three officers."
The armed man was struck by the officers's bullets and was taken to a local hospital. The extent of his injuries is unknown but his condition is listed as stable, the DA explained.
"There is no current danger to the public," the police said.
The incident was listed as an "aggravated assault" on the police release.
The police rerouted traffic in the area as investigators remained on the scene. The road closure was at the 100 block of Hershey Avenue, between High and Saint Joseph Street, and the 1100 block of St. Joseph Street, between Hershey Avenue and Euclid Avenue.
The Lancaster County District Attorney's office is leading the investigation into this incident. The statement by the DA's office is preliminary as the investigation is ongoing.
